‘Why Ada, that’s the real hanky panky!’ remarked actor Charles Hawtry to Ada Coleman, bartender at the Savoy’s American Bar, when she presented him with this drink some time around 1915. And the drink’s name was born. If you know your British actors, you might confuse him with Charles Hawtry of Carry On fame. However, the latter Charles was such a fan of the original that he borrowed his name. This fresh and minty variation on a Sweet Martini or Gin Manhattan has proven to be a favourite for generations since then.
